A couple of days ago, Alex walked into my room.
"Mummy? I need to get dressed."
"What? Alex, you are dressed."
"I need to get dressed for the snow. I'll be right back. Okay? All right."
And she ran off.
I have no idea how she knows anything about snow, or how one would dress for it, but whatever.
After a few minutes she returned, dressed in this:
Marcus calls this her "granny gnome" look. Me, I just call it crazy.
I will, however, draw your attention to the COMPLETELY ADORABLE new Birkenstocks on her feet, which, despite the ridiculous price, clearly had to be bought. And is it silly that I was rather flattered that she chose them to complete her look? It just made my heart so full.
Full, that is, after I got over all the crazy.
Have a joyful weekend, everyone.

Does she have any of those picture books about the seasons? Since I grew up in Southern California, those books never matched our reality ("and in the winter it snows! and in the spring the flowers start to bloom!).
There was a shelf in one of the closets where my mother kept all the wool sweaters, scarves, mittens, etc. for when we went to the mountains.

Okay, so I get that she knows that she needs a hat and a swaeter for the snow. My boy hasn't seen snow either, but he knows it's cold because we've told him. But HOW does she know that on a sunny day that snow is BRIGHT? Perhaps because she is.

I came over from my sister's site (Surrender, Dorothy). OMG, your daughter is soooooooooo cute. This just made my morning. Thank you for sharing!

You're right...she is the most adorable bag lady that I've ever seen. And those shoes are to die for. :)

LOVE it!
And for the record, that is exactly how I dress to go out in the snow ;-)

Perfect! I must have a pair of those star-shaped sun glasses. I believe it would be impossible to be cranky while wearing them.

When my daughter was just about three, she wore a floor-length, pink tulle ballerina skirt (with attached pink sparkly leotard) for about three months or so. Every day. Everywhere. I made her wear clothes underneath (it was WINTER!), but she wore it every day.
I really miss it, especially since yesterday we bought her a new outfit for a wedding we're attending this weekend. She eschewed the sweet "little girl" dresses and went straight for a silk skirt and black tank-and-shrug outfit. It's totally adorable, but it wasn't a sweet little girl dress. But the shoes! She chose red patent leather ballet flats.
What a girl. (And Alex? SOOOOOOOO CUTE!)

thanks Karen for your website and letting us see all the things Alex does - it brings happy memories of when my two girls were litte and did silly things like this! i love seeing her and can relate with you. A word of advice their choice of clothes get weird and wilder the older they get!

Okay, here's a comment proving my weirdness. Bobsleigh racing, does Trinidad-Tobago have a team she could eventually train with?

Meredith --
Not weird at all. However, to my knowledge, Jamaica is the only Caribbean island with a bobsled team. :o)

I love her shoes! I looked up the Birkenstock website, but they only showed 3 styles available for kids in the US, but not that style. I was wondering if you ordered her shoes online or bought them in a store.
I would love to buy a pair for my daughter.

This is nothing. My little boy came down stairs two nights ago buck naked save for a Darth Vadar mask. At least your child expresses herself WITH clothes. :)

My kids tried to make snowmen out of sand this summer. And ditto with snow angels in sand. :)
Alex is far too adorable. I hope you have a page for "I dressed myself, adorably mismatched" in her scrapbook/lifebook!

Love it!

Oh, she would be a joy to play in the snow with, I bet. Thanks for making me smile, my dear. Have a good one!

Genius, I love it! Girl is prepared and adorable to boot.

Too cute! Her cousin (Kennedy) is most excited that she has the same star shades as her. "Look mom, Alex has the same sun glasses as me! Wow, they sell those all the way in Trinidad too?"
